Q: “Denise, I am thinking about ordering some box candies so I can drop by my past clients’ homes when I am in the neighborhood. What do you think?”
A: I have never been a fan of this idea because I don’t like it when people drop in on me. Many people these days are very protective of their privacy and theft is an issue. So I would encourage you to tweak your plan a bit. What if instead you:
1. Sent them something in the mail?
2. Started a drop-by tradition such as delivering pumpkins at Halloween or pies at Thanksgiving? This way they expect it each year.
3. Have a pick up instead for the above so that instead of delivering pumpkins or pies they are picking them up at your office or somewhere where they can stop in for some hot cider before hitting the road?
4. Create something in conjunction with an annual property report and send it with that.
I think it is great that you are thinking of your past clients! Good work!
Denise I agree with you 100%! I don’t like having people “pop by” my house unannounced either. One other suggestion, though, might be for an agent to email or text and ask if the item could be brought by. For instance “Mr. and Mrs. Past Client, I am going to be previewing a house in your neighborhood on Saturday around 11am. I wondered if I could drop by for a moment to say hello and leave a gift with you?” Then they’d be expecting you – hence no surprise visit. I’ve done that a few times and it’s been well received. Even if the time isn’t convenient and they say no, at least they know you haven’t forgotten them.
Mary – Wonderful to hear from you! Giving people some warning ahead of time is a great idea. Thank you! Denise
